motherhood: a high calling from god

Motherhood is a high calling from God which can bring spiritual nurture, love, and stability within the family unit. It is a position of true honor and privilege to every woman whom God chooses to use in order to establish, build, and grow a Christian family and home.

Being a mother can be a daunting challenge at times, but can become a true life-changing experience and rewarding adventure as well. It requires you to wear various hats in the home. For example, you are not JUST a mother, but your job requires you to be a:

  •  teacher
  •  cook,
  •  home manager,
  •  time manager
  •  negotiator,
  •  counselor/psychiatrist,
  •  problem-solver,
  • coach,
  •  organizer,
  •  " taxi" driver,
  •  team player,
  •  cheer leader,
  •  spiritual guide/leader,
  •  tear-wiper,
  • homework helper,
  •  and many others that are too extensive to mention here.

As you can see, your job and career as a mother is highly prestigious and important!

motherhood is a precious gift from god

If you are a mother, can you see that your position in life is a true gift from God? It may be hard to have that particular viewpoint, especially if you have children who seem to love giving you grief and aggravation in your home at times. I think this is a normal thing with kids in various families however. None of us have perfect kids or a perfect family, and so our children are going to misbehave at times, regardless of how wonderful our parenting skills are.

Grandparents, especially grandmothers, are a wonderful resource of help and wisdom in teaching us how to parent our little ones as they develop and grow. Ask for their direction and mature guidance whenever you find yourself stuck in a situation that may call for an experienced helping hand.

I can remember as a young mother with a small baby at home wondering, crying out to God, and asking Him why I had to go through all the troubles and trials of raising my daughter, as precious as she was- of having to do so much laundry, picking up her toys, getting no sleep at night, having to tidy the house so much, agonizing over her colicky crying, and just not sure of how I fit into His plan with all of the many responsibilities of having her. Later on however; throughout the years, He let me see how my role as her mother was such an honor and privilege; how it would serve His purpose in raising a wonderful child of God, who in turn, would become a Christian and serve His purpose for her life also.

Please consider this fact: Your job as a mother is not for nothing, it's for everything! God has placed you into the position of motherhood for a higher calling, in that, He needs you there to help grow your children and family into a strong spiritual unit for Him. It is ALL for Him. Through your daily work, troubles, challenges, and victories in raising your kids, you are helping to build up God's kingdom and ultimately glorifying Him in the process.

We see in the book of Luke that God had a plan for Elisabeth to become the mother of John, who was to be the forerunner of Christ. Her role was immensely important in the raising up of a man who would be God's speaker in introducing our Savior to the world and baptizing Jesus before His ministry began.

Just look also, at the plan He had for Mary in becoming the mother of Jesus. God saw how Mary could be used for Him in becoming the mother of His divine Son. As a willing vessel, she was called with the highest calling--to be the mother of the Savior of the world. Imagine that! What an honor and privilege God placed upon her life.

looking at motherhood from the bible

You are responsible for so much as a mother who nurtures her children in the love and care you offer, as well as in guiding them through life from the instructions given in scripture. Here are a few verses to inspire your journey through motherhood and will help you appreciate your God-given role as a mother and servant of Christ:

  • Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."
  • Psalm 127:3 says, "Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb in His reward."
  • Isaiah 66:13 says, "As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem."
  • Psalm 113:9 says, "He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the Lord."   And, lastly,
  • Proverbs 31:25-30 says, "Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, as he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised."

As you go through motherhood, it may be some time yet before you begin to see the fruits of your labor. However, it is well worth the wait, and well worth the sacrifice in knowing that God is orchestrating His will through a willing vessel, and that is you.

Through your service and faithfulness to Him, you are raising and training His future leaders, teachers, missionaries, and so forth, in spreading the gospel to others who are lost. This is your chance to give honor, praise, and thanksgiving to a Heavenly Father who has given you the greatest job there is--motherhood!
